The European Railway Clusters Initiative (ERCI) hosted the webinar “Accessible Indoor Navigation for Blind Rail Passengers,” focused on one of the most important areas of modern mobility : inclusion and accessibility in railway transport.
The event featured Pinpoint, a company developing indoor GPS systems for smartphones and IoT devices, and DB Systel, responsible for digital solutions driving the future of rail.
The presentations explored how an indoor navigation system for blind passengers was implemented in railway stations, covering:
The specific needs of visually impaired users;
The types of data and sensors required within stations;
The use of Ultra-Wideband (UWB) technology for precise smartphone positioning;
as well as the challenges of technical and operational integration.
This initiative highlights the importance of an inclusive, digital, and people-centered railway, aligned with the principles of sustainable and accessible mobility for all.
